MARKET HOUSE Ninth Street at Main

Located in the heart of downtown, the Market House was the site of regular auctions of enslaved people in antebellum Lynchburg. From 1814 to 1873 the structure stood in the center of Ninth Street with its front doors opening onto Main Street. The busy public square in front of the Market House became the customary site for court-ordered commissioner’s or trustee’s sales of real estate and personal property, including enslaved men, women, and children of all ages.
